Module 19 - Launching Your Campaign

You now have...
  1. Blog
  2. Facebook
  3. YouTube
  4. E-newsletter
But... how do you get an audience, members, or a movement?

First things first- you should have already done a power analysis and know who has influence and can make the changes you want.

And ask the question... 'Does my campaign actually need support?'

Preach to the Choir
  • 'Get your house in order'... who are all the members in your organisation? Do you have a mailing list? Do you have up to date emails and mobiles?
  • Use your friends... now is when you wish you had 500 friends on Facebook! It isn't necessarily spam when you do it to friends. They probably have similar interests to you or are affected by the same issues.
  • Family... they won't report you for spam, right?
Recruit those that probably agree with you
  • Find organisations that are partners or work on similar issues
    • Cross post blogs
    • Link on resource or link pages
    • Get in their e-newsletter
    • Invite to guest blog on your site
    • Interview their people and post on YouTube. Share the link so they can embed too!
  • Find places and online spaces where people are already talking about your issue and participate!
    • Google search...
    • What blogs are the most popular on your issue?
    • Are there any online forums or discussion boards?
    • What are the most recent newspaper articles written and the comment section?
    • Are there YouTube videos with active comment sections?
  • Register your campaign
Create a target list of Influencers
  • Who is the most influential person on your issue? How can you get your campaign in front of them?
  • What organisations have the most influence? How can you partner or collaborate together?
  • Find someone high profile to endorse or 'Be a patron' of your group
    • Lords or MPs that work on the issue (see Module 10)
    • Celebrates that do charity work
    • Journalists who write about your issue
Get press coverage

  • Look up your local press (Local directory / other Media)
  • Answer the 5 pre-questions (Module **)
  • Pitch your idea for a story to the journalist (email or phone)
  • Write a press release (if you need to)
  • Email, call, and follow up
  • What will you do once you are in the paper???

Focus on actions

  • What types of actions are you asking your supporters to take?
    • Sign a petition
    • Email your MP
    • Attend an event
    • Donate to our cause
    • Write a blog or case study
    • Join the organising committee
    • Volunteer a skill for your group
