Module 13 - Using Video Online

Online videos can be a powerful medium to convey your message. They can also go very wrong. Watch how some campaigns remain authentic while others lose they special touch.

1. YouTube and Others

YouTube is the biggest and most widely used online video community. If you have videos, you probably need a presence here. But there are other places online that have certain advantages.
  • Vimeo - Has a clean, professional format that was originally used by film makers
  • Dailymotion - Lots of content and a good alternative to mainstream YouTube
  • Current - Great for documentaries and other edgy content. Also can upload your own videos.
  • Big Think - Inspirational and informational videos on a range of subjects
  • Howcast - Videos with strict guidelines on how to do things
  • Ustream - Allows you to set up live video streams of events or other things

2. Examples of Campaigns

What are online videos good for?
  • Vlog (video-log)
  • Reflection
  • Testimony
  • Case studies
  • Representing your organisation
Have look at Seethedifference.org, a site that allows you to view organisations' videos and then donate straight away!

Other good examples:

TED - These videos are of brilliant speeches given by people around the world. They are some of the most profound videos I have ever seen and can be used for presentations or motivational talks.

Testimony Project - This project gathers testimonies of asylum seekers in the UK with the help of a professional film maker. They are great examples and compelling shots.

It Gets Better - This campaign was started in the US in Sept 2010 in order to give hope to suicidal gay youth. The project has exploded with over 5000 videos, including videos from President Obama and PM Cameron. It is a good example of a campaign that uses amateur videos to give private, personal testimonies to make social change.
Finally, we watched one of the most compelling video testimonies you can find on the Internet.

3. Shooting video and upload video to YouTube
The most important part of the video is the content. Make sure you have something interesting and compelling to say. The best videos (as seen above) are personal and give telling stories. These stories are powerful examples and you don't need fancy photography or editing to make a great video. You need a compelling story to tell.

Luckily, all MRCF Digital Activists have compelling stories!

Here are instructions on how to upload a YouTube video:
