Module 2 - Social Networks for Individuals

The Internet becomes a more rewarding and fun place when you start interacting with others online. You probably have used emails to exchange plans with friends but there are many other platforms you can use to have similar or new interactions with both old and new friends.



Here are a few of the basics:

Online Etiquette :
-Be polite and civil but feel free to disagree
-Shorter is better
-Don't leave personal details (do not put last name or contact info)
-Don't expect people to respond to you

1. Commenting on blogs, websites, and reviews
-Last posted comment on top
-Not organised by thread, sometimes hard to follow
-Often moderated by owner of blog

Examples:

2. Discussion/ Message boards and Forums

-Typically organised by topics or threads
-Often require login/passwords
-Usually have dedicated communities of people behind them that answer questions

3. Personal Facebook Profiles

Step 1: Sign up for Facebook

Step 2: Follow the next button to build your profile. You don't have to do them all but choose what you are comfortable with.

Some of the essentials are:
-Name
-Profile picture
-Wall

Step 3: Find your friends on Facebook

Step 4: Find organisations you like by searching Facebook Pages (hint: Find MRCF on FB!)

Step 5: Other things to explore on Facebook:
  • News Feed
  • Messages
  • Events
  • Groups

IMPORTANT- Setup VERY strick privacy settings by following these steps:

  1. Create your personal Facebook Profile 
  2. Like the MRCF Facebook Page 
  3. Confirm attendance on 7 Week Digital Activism course on Facebook
  4. Comment on the Digital Activism course FB Wall
