  10. Somalia: Controls on military assistance must be tightened
    Posted: 21 January 2010

In a new report published today [21 Jan], Amnesty International has called for arms transfers to Somalia to be suspended until there are adequate safeguards to prevent weapons from being used to commit war crimes and human rights abuses.

Just yesterday in a statement made to the House of Commons, the Prime Minister promised increased capacity-building in Somalia.

Amnesty’s report lists the UK as reportedly developing a standardised programme of instruction for Transitional Federal Government (TFG)’s basic infantry recruits, in collaboration with the African Union’s peacekeeping operation (AMISOM).

The UK government has said that any assistance to the Somali government is in line with the UK's human rights responsibilities and obligations, but does not include specific human rights content, into these arrangements.

Amnesty is calling on all states that train or who are considering training Somali government forces – including the UK Government – to ensure that safeguards are put in place so that this assistance is not used to facilitate human rights abuses.

Amnesty International has urged that all states providing, financing or planning military and police training for the TFG must also provide training in international humanitarian law and on arms management. They should also press for the establishment of oversight procedures for TFG forces.

  11. Not Gone but forgotten Somalia man ASYLM Seeker in UK living £10 pound a week The theme of destitution has been picked up by the broadsheets. For example, a recent article in The Guardian reported on the hardship faced by those who continue to live on just £10 per week. Abdi from Somalia, whose case is currently under review, alternates between a mosque, an alleyway and a stairway, sleeping rough each night. Despite the destitution he faces, Abdi has decided to stay in the UK saying, "if you understand that it is a choice between living here in this way and going back to be slaughtered, then you understand that there is no choice."

  13. Your Excellency,

Egypt's women played a major role in the 2011 uprising, but are being excluded from the reform process. Women jurists were left out of the constitutional reform committee and women demonstrators have been subjected to verbal and physical abuse.

Egypt has an opportunity to begin afresh on the basis of equality and non-discrimination for all its citizens. But that opportunity will not last if women continue to be excluded.

Your announcement of a new national committee for women is welcome but cannot substitute real dialogue with women and women civil society activists. For lasting human rights change to be achieved in Egypt, women must be full partners in the process.

I urge you to ensure that women and women's rights activists form part of any reform processes, and that human rights, non-discrimination and equality are at the heart of reforms in the run-up to elections this year.

Please also ensure that there is genuine consultation with women activists and that obstacles to women's participation in the process are addressed.

    Yours sincerely,

The Congo is the greatest humanitarian crisis in the world today where nearly 6 million people have died since 1996, half of them children under 5 yrs old and hundreds of thousands of women have been raped all as a result of the scramble for Congo's wealth.
